We are PhD students in the Cell and Molecular Biology Program at Colorado State University, and have done both basic and applied algae research. In August of 2013, we decided to combine our algae knowledge with unique, fun and educational products. First up, growing greeting cards.
In July 2013, Scott went to a grocery store to buy a greeting card for his grandmother, but couldn't find a unique card. He left the grocery store and drove around Fort Collins in search of a meaningful, unique card, but couldn't find anything. In the end, he paid $12 for a greeting card that was subpar. This inspired our idea of using living algae cells as an ink to grow your message.
Additionally, Steve taught high school for seven years and leads several educational outreach programs at CSU. For this reason, Steve realized that living ink products are an exceptional educational tool for teaching children and the general public about science and innovation.
